TACTILE PAVING

Tactile paving, also known as tactile ground surface indicators (TGSIs), is a specialized pavement system that incorporates raised patterns or textures to provide tactile and visual cues for individuals with visual impairments or other mobility challenges. Tactile paving is designed to enhance accessibility and safety in public spaces, particularly at pedestrian crossings, train platforms, bus stops, and other areas with potential hazards.

The raised patterns on tactile paving are typically detectable by touch and serve as a means of communication, guiding individuals along paths and alerting them to changes in their surroundings. Different patterns and textures are used to indicate specific information. For example, blister-like patterns may indicate a hazard or potential danger, while straight lines or grooves may indicate a safe walking path.

Tactile paving serves multiple purposes. It assists people with visual impairments in navigating public spaces more independently, helping them detect potential obstacles, curbs, or intersections. It also provides clear indications of pedestrian crossing points, ensuring individuals can safely cross roads with the help of tactile cues.
